I am a relatively new user to Unix. I have worked on Linux fo some basic things and understand the arthitecture and basic usage.

I want to administer my Powerbook but I realised that there are no tools and guides available (I may be wrong) and out of the box, OS X is more towards desktop OS.

I wanted to install Qemu and for that needed to create /opt folder but I didn't have permission so had use a user with administrator permission and created the folder and then became owner of the folder.

I realised that typical volumes such as /opt, /var are not created by default.

is there any online guide available for basic administration of OS X?

The first user acount you create is usually admin and then you sudo instead of enabling root.

What do you mean by basic administration, I'm guessing its something that you can't do with System Preferences.

If you want to install Unix type software I would suggest http://fink.sourceforge.net/
There are alot of GUI wrappers for common Unix software. Someone posted a link to a gui for configuring the mail server on OS X Client.

There's also an O'Reilly book: Mac OS X for Unix Geeks. This is GREAT. It assumes you have a clue about the command line and shows you the stuff that makes OS X different.

BTW, /opt is not standard, but /var is. Also, like with Linux, these don't have to be different volumes. In fact, it just makes life harder if they are.
