I got these instructions from a person on the Apple discussions. What are the implications of replacing a .kext file with an older version? Would this cause problems when I try to install future upgrades? Would replacing the .kext file cause any problems at all?

Thanks,

lw

1. Get a copy of AppleADM103x.kext v1.0.5 from somewhere and put it on the desktop (use a Package opener program like Pacifier, available from MacUpdate, and extract the AppleADM103x.kext v1.0.5 from the 10.2.8 Combo update package, available from Apple Downloads/Support website).

2. Backup your AppleADM103x.kext v1.0.9 located in System/Libary/Extensions (I'd recommend copying it to the desktop and then archiving it into a .zip/.sit file and puting it in a safe place).

3. Move the AppleADM103x.kext v1.0.9 from System/Extensions/Library to the Trash (you'll need to authenticate with your password to do this).

4. Move/Copy the AppleADM103x.kext v1.0.5 into System/Library/Extensions folder by dragging it from the desktop to the System/Library/Extensions folder and holding the option key. Once the AppleADM103x.kext v1.0.5 is copied to System/Library/Extensions, delete the one on your desktop.

5. Open DiskUtility and repair permissions. You should see the permissions for the file System/Library/Extensions/AppleADM103x.kext get changed.

6. Restart your computer.

7. Empty the trash.

Ahem.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I can read the instructions, I just want to know if I can hurt the computer by following them.

As for the kext, I'd bet that technique works, but without trying it, I couldn't say for sure. It could conceivably cause all sorts of problems, but I can't really say what will happen.

Oh, now I understand. I should've read further and I might have been able to figure that out. Thanks.

The temp of my computer is 102 F and I can hear the fan when previously it was very quiet. Hate to risk messing around with the .kext file but that fan noise will really get to me. I wonder how long until the next update?

What I'd probably do if you were going to go this route would be to backup the existing kext first by moving it out of the /System directory before you put the old one back in. That way, if the machine becomes unbootable, you'll still be able to get in via single-user mode and put the 10.3.8 kext back.

I am the original writer of the post quoted from Apple discussions.

Tired of this topic. It should be closed because the fan on powerbook is resolved, guaranteed by downgrading the kext file.

First off, let me apologize to CharlesS for the incorrect naming of PACIFIST!

Second, this fan/.kext issue has been around since 10.3.2 update.

I have installed the old .kext from 10.3.0 Panther Retail CD and it makes my fans go from coming on at 125˚F and off at 116˚F (in 10.3.8) to coming on at 147˚F and going off at 138˚F. You get a significantly hotter computer, but it's much quieter.

I have verified the fan issue with a senior Apple "Product Specialist" last Thursday 2/12/05.

More info on the original issue (from the 10.3.2 days) can be found here:

http://www.deleet.de/ray/pbfanfix.html

FYI:

AppleADM103x.kext versions are below:

10.2.8 = 1.0.5b1
10.3.2 = 1.0.5b1
10.3.0 = 1.0.5b1
10.3.2 = 1.0.6b2
10.3.3 = 1.0.6b2
10.3.4 = 1.0.6b2
10.3.5 = 1.0.6b2
10.3.6 = 1.0.6b2
10.3.7 = 1.0.6b2
10.3.8 = 1.0.9b3

If you had updated your computer to a 10.3.2 update after 10.3.2 and didn't use the COMBO update, you wouldn't have the AppleADM103x.kext file updated (by say Software Update) since it didn't change until 10.3.8 recently. Don't know if that makes sense, but I swapped out my AppleKDM103x.kext file after updating to 10.3.2 (took the kext back to 1.0.5b1) and never had the fan issue all the way through 10.3.7 - only got the fan issue back with 10.3.8 Software Update installation.

It could theoretically cause problems, but considering there is nobody forcing you to run an OS that is NOT 10.3.0 or 10.3.1 (both which include the old .kext file), you will just have more heat in reality.

I don't think that there are too many other things controlled by the AppleADM103x.kext than the fans on Macs, so there shouldn't be any software-related issues. I haven't had any in a long time. I am sure Tiger might change this, but probably not. The AppleADM103x.kext file has been used in the same way since Jaguar. In fact, the version/file of the AppleADM103x.kext file didn't even change at all between 10.2.8 and 10.3.1!

There are new kext files like AppleFan.kext and others that have come along with the new G5 hardware, but I have no experience with them at all.
