I'm making some DVDs.

I edited some video in FCP, about 50 minutes long. I export it from the timeline via compressor.

Now for the OSX part.

If I even select the .m2v file in OSX it beach balls the finder and I have to relaunch. If I try to open the file in QT, locks QT up. If I author and preview the DVD in DVD Studio Pro, it plays fine, so the file is not total junk.

60 min HQ was fine, but these are preview only compressions, so I was using 60 min Fast Encode.

Anyone have any similar experiences?

I've already done some of the usual stuff, repair permissions, cursed, rebooted, recompressed the file.

Thanks...

That's just QT (in the case of the Finder, it's trying to generate a preview because you're in Column view, yes?). Since m2v has no header, it goes and parses the whole file, and stalls while doing so. If you wait long enough it will come back with the file open, but it's not worth the wait as QT's mpeg-2 decoder is downright terrible. Just be sure to close the preview with that little disclosure triangle before clicking on m2v files, and don't try to open them in QT. Unless they're really small.

Theres a pretty interesting thread going on in Ars
http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/...m/653004638631

Apparently, someone is working on implementing open gl into quick time. I cant tell you much more since its over my head. But it may solve some of your problems in .m2v

Well, for whatever reason, 60 min Fast Encode crashed DVD Studio Pro, while 60 min HQ encodes worked fine.

I'll never know why this was the case...

----

Not sure what Open GL would do for previews within the finder. I just need to see the first frame (or no frame, just turn it off like mentioned above), and it seems like it's trying to load the hour long .m2v file.

In general, DVD production has gone smooth, but this round of files was acting poorly...
