I am new to OSX (10.3.7), and I feel that I need more info on using it efficiently and effectively. I prefer books to on-line help files. I looked on Amazon.com and saw several books on OSX. Is there a particular book that anybody would like to recommend?

I love this book:

Very easy to follow and love the pictures, I bought it for the teachers at our school who are getting new Macs, as we have been an OS 9 school until recently. They like it!

I have not looked at the others. Hope you find what you are looking for!

I found "Mac OS X Pather Edition - The Missing Manual" helpful. David Pogue sure seems to know his stuff.

Check sub-version # to see if you can match your latest OS what ever book you purchase.

Ditto -- This book is VERY useful and very comprehensive. I don't think you can go wrong with it. When I first switched to OSX 3 years ago, I read and re-read this book, first. It was (and remains) invaluable.
