I believe this is Mac OS related...
I'm trying to copy files to an external hard drive... I keep getting the error:
"You cannot copy the item "Icon " because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk cannot display."
I can't find such a file. It happens with every folder I try: Documents, Movies, etc.
I really need to back up these files and get them off my HD so I can get some work done. Is the issue with the Mac OS, the drive or what?
This is VERY frustrating as I have been trying to get this done for days with various issues.
What am I missing?!?

How is the target drive formatted? It should be HFS+.

I don't know. How can I find out or reformat it? I looked at Disk Utility...?
I am a better Mac User than Mac Admin...

Ok- got it. I reformatted the drive with Disk Utility and it is working just fine. I thought it was invisible OSX files, but I guess not.
Stiil not sure how to tell if its HFS+- any input.
Thanks!!!!

To find out how it's formated, via, disk utility.
1) Highlight the logical volume you want (not the disk)
2) Hit the info button.
On line will read...
File System : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
or something else if its not HFS+
Click the erase button to reformat.
What likely is happening is the disk is formatted FAT32. An one of your filenames contains a character that is fine for HFS+ but reserved for FAT32.

Ok- so Mac OS Extended is considered HFS+ then- is that right?

Correct.
You can also click on the Aqua Apple in the upper left of the screen on the Mac OS menu bar and select "About This Mac", then click on "More Info...", click on Hardware/ATA (or Firewire or whatever kind of hard drive you have), then drill down until you see the name of the drive you're interested in.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the simplest method - select the drive and Get Info (right-click, ctrl-click, Command-I, Action button in Panther's Finder, whatever) and it will tell you the formatting.
The OS keeps "Icon" files inside of folders that have custom icons, I believe. I don't know why there'd be trouble copying these to a non HFS+ drive but I guess there is.
