I logged on to a remote AppleShare IP server, and it had been awhile since I had changed the default network password to a longer one. I typed my password and found out that Connect to Server stopped me, saying that there was an 8 character limit. Indeed, the first 8 characters were all it took to log in, which was very reminiscent of the old OS X login limitation. I do realize the two things must have little in common. So, is AppleShare IP limited to 8 character passwords, or is this just a case of an older AppleShare IP server?
I decided to trash the server I had mounted and to go to Connect to Server again in order to write down the actual message I saw, and what do you know, I got my first modern Kernel Panic. I suppose I should have waited for the first volume to disappear - that seems to be what did me in. That's the second KP I have experienced; the first happened on my first day with 10.0 on my iBook, using iDisk. (Was not iDisk based on AppleShare IP at that point? If so, it would be extraordinary to be hit by two KPs, years apart, due to the same bug. I cannot say for certain that the same KP occurred, but it is interesting to consider.) Panic log was rather shorter than I expected:
Code:

I assume getnewvnode is a low level networking call of some sort. Here's another question: in the startup screen, why isn't the word Internet in "internet services" capitalized? Printing Services is.
