How to use alt key for ncurses programs?

I'm using ssh via terminal.app to get a terminal to my SuSE box, where I'm trying to run YaST in ncurses mode. I'm using an iBook, and I did enable the whole keyboard in the system keyboard prefs.

Normally I navigate an ncurses window using the alt-key shortcuts. How should I do these on an iBook?
