<new to osx> I'm trying to remove an app from the dock. I thought the way to do this was to drag it from the dock to the desktop, but when I go to drag Mail to the desktop, it gets sucked back to the dock.

I've already set Thunderbird as the default mail app. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Try dragging it a little further onto desktop. Keep dragging Mail away from the dock and onto desktop until your dock 'unmagnifies' and snaps back to it's original size, then let it go. I just vaporized Mail outta my dock, and this worked for me.
Good luck!

Also make sure Mail isn't running.

Oops. That reminds me that I've got to put Mail back in my dock. Now that would've driven me nuts in the morning when I went to check email. Would've had a panic attack.
"Argh! What happened to Mail!?"

Thanks -- it's gone now. My wife misses the whooshing sound played with an outgoing message, but that's life.

I never could figure out why Mail was putting everything in the trash -- very annoying.

Thunderbird is a first rate program though.

Could it be that your junk filter is turned on and automagically putting them into the trash ?
