Hi folks,

I have been using Mac OS X on my PB 15" for quite some time without problem.

Recently, I updated the 10.3.8 Mac OS X update.

Ever since then, I have a peculiar problem whereby, after some time of usage (usually 1~2 days), the Finder does not respond to launching programs. For instance, double clicking an application icon (either on the desktop or in the dock, or in a Finder window), will result in the program icon being created in the dock, but will not launch.

If I attempt to restart or shutdown, Mac OS X will then notify me that it can't shutdown those programs that fail to launch earlier.

Need your kind help folks.

Thanks!

In the future, don't start thread titles with "Help!" -- I removed it from this one.

Does it do this for all programs, or just certain ones?

Do you have Sophos Anti-Virus installed?

Charles, this behaviour is for all programs. There's no anti virus program installed.

Thanks.

Okay, I once helped someone who had this problem and had a really strange and rare problem where the prebinding information for some binaries became corrupted somehow, which was fixed by redoing the prebinding. I don't know if this is your particular problem, but if it is, this process will solve it. If not, post in here again.

Try this:

1. Reboot your computer with the Command and S keys held down until you get a prompt.

2. Type the following commands *exactly* as they appear below:

fsck

If fsck finds and repairs any problems, then type 'reboot' without the quotes, hold down Command and S again when it reboots, and run fsck again. Repeat this process until fsck says the disk is OK. Then, enter these commands:

mount -uw /
update_prebinding -root / -force
reboot

See if this helps at all.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for your help. Gave it a shot, but fsck did not complain about any faults. So I completed the set of mounting statements and rebooted.

I'll monitor the situation and let you know.

Thanks,
San

The situation did not clear up after a reboot? It really should have. Check your Console log (in the Utilities folder).

I was going to ask him to check the Console, but then I remembered that he said that none of his applications were starting, and that would include Console.

It sounds like he hadn't tried it yet to see if the problem had disappeared after updating the prebinding at the time he wrote his last post. He said he was going to get back to us, so I'm just waiting for his response.

Hi folks,

Sorry for the delayed update, I wanted to monitor for at least a few days before knowing whether the prebinding worked.

So far, it seems to be working. I've been using the PB pretty heavily these few days, and the OS is giving me no further problems.

The console log is a good idea, but I'm not sure what exactly to look for.

Thanks for the help guys.

Glad to be of assistance.

Imagine, even Update Prebinding can be good for something once in a while!
