10.3.8 update problems

This happened to someone I know and I completely clueless. He updated his Mac to 10.3.8, but now at restart his Mac displays "Mac OS X Server" at boot. I asked him if he installed the server version on his computer and he said no. He also downloaded the 10.3.8 Combo update a few times, and re-ran it, but no difference.

Permissions have been repaired too... any ideas?

I did read in these very forums of this happening at least once before. Perhaps a search will turn up the answer.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

My mom's G5 at work got messed up. She called me up today wondering why after she updated her fans were on full blast and it stayed on the gray screen wit the zero with the cross through it.

I guess it messed up her entire system too...not just the fans.
