Granted, I'm using a Mac mini, so it may be the video (I have 1 GB of RAM and 7200 PM HDD), but scrolling and window resizing is very choppy. Is this just a limitation of the mini?

Not here on a PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz, 512MB RAM, 10,000 rpm Raptor harddisk, NVIDIA 6800 DDL Ultra 256 MB VRAM, OS X 10.3.8.
Neither on a iMac SE DV 400 MHz G3, 7200 rpm, a whopping 16 MB (!) VRAM, 1 GB RAM, OS X 10.3.8.

So far yes. Even on the most powerful of Macs window resizing _can_ be slow.

Some more 2D window acceleration will be built into 10.4 Tiger but it has yet to be seen how effective it is.

in a browser try scrolling the very often overlooked browser feature "space bar". Can't be beaten!

Posted this in the Mini forum, but here goes:

Who resizes windows? Just curious as I hardly ever do it on my Mac or PC. Hit green on the Mac and it resizes automagically. Hit Max on the PC and it does it too. I rarely grab the window and resize.

Heck, on this PC I'm typing on, Firefox won't resize smoothly....

Scrolling same thing - I use the scrollwheel or Cmd-End to go to the end of a document.

Glad to hear it's a great little machine. From my 30 mins of playing at the Apple store, it seemed quite speedy, even hooked up to the 23" display.

If you are using the arrow keys to scroll, the key repeat rate and delay until repeat controls the scrolling speeds.

Maybe they'll remove the DebugCode™ in Tiger to improve the Snappiness™!

Seriously though, do we have to go through this every couple weeks? Next time just point to previous discussions unless something has changed.

Agreed, I love that one! It works in Mail as well and is very handy as it scrolls the 'preview pane' even when your focus is in the message pane! It's genius.

I find myself trying to use it in MS Word due to its truly lousy scrolling, and of course I end up inserting a space somewhere .

I didn't think Quartz 2D Extreme was enabled by default in the Tiger seeds. I as under the impression that you that you had to turn it on in Quartz Debug.

Yup. It's been said - I have said - millions of times. Window resizing and scrolling is slooooow in Mac OS X. But other that that, the OS pretty much rocks. A small price to pay to be out of Winblows hell.

Page Up and Page Down keys are a little more intuitive, I would have thought (except for those with a laptop, or crappy old iMac keyboard who don't have those keys).

fn+arrow up = page up
fn+arrow down = page down.

Works fine on my laptop.
