A girl on campus just gave me her Lombard to fix (bronze keyboard powerbook) because IE was screwing up. It's running OS 9.2. That said, I went to apple system profiler to figure out if she might want to run OS X on it (it felt exceptionally fast for an OS 9 machine) and ASP told me it was a 100Mhz G3. And I said to myself... what the heck this feels faster than my iMac 333Mhz felt. She's got tons of RAM so I'm thinking she's got an upgrade card in (she got it from her brother who got it from someone else so she doesn't know anything about it). Anyone know of any way to tell what proc she has?

The Lombards have either a 333Mhz G3 or a 400Mhz G3. I seem to remember that the Powerlogix upgrade card for the Lombard, the BlueChip LS G4, which is a 500MHz G4 that completely replaces the old G3 processor, sometimes gave erroneous readings for the CPU speed and type. And here comes a word of warning. If it is indeed an upgraded Lombard, be prepared for trouble. They had enormous problems with overheating and not being able to use more than 256MB ram. You can check this by opening up the keyboard (two latches at the back of the keyboard), unsrewing the metal plate that covers the RAM etc and looking at what is in it.

If it's a normal G3 then just screw everything back in, install Panther and have fun .I have on my Lombard and it runs just fine, if very slow, but that's ok for me because I only use the terminal on that machine.

My advice with a Lombard is that unless you do more than browse the net and read mail on it, OSX is not really going to be your friend there. OS9 is much better for it.

I was looking at web pages in IE 5 and it was slow and bulky and she couldn't even do everything on the web she wanted with it. That said she had over 300 megs of RAM with it.

If she's prepare to use IE5, then she'll be better off with OS9.

Actually she wants to use MSN which OS 9 can't use behind our proxy so I'm going to have to install OS X for her. I think she'll like it though, she just got it a week ago and was like... yahh... and doesn't really know how to use it yet. So I figure I'll set her up with OS X and some decent apps that she can use for school and she should be reasonably happy
