Hi, I ran TechtoolPro 4.3 from the edrive on a G5 at work.

Everything was going swimmingly, just like it always does every friday, until the defrag decided to hang. I left the machine for about an hour just to make sure it had actually hanged. It had.

I had to force quit TTP and then reran all the tests (hardware, file, directory structure etc) again and no problems were found. So everything seemed to be in order. Reran defrag and this time there were no hitches. Everything was fine.

But the G5 now hangs during boot up at the Login Window Staring phase. I've tried single-user mode and fsck and it reports that the drive appears to be ok.

We also have Diskwarrior 3 - is it worth trying this or is there something else I could/should try first.

Luckily, I had backed up all the important data first onto an external drive, but it would still be nice to be able to save the machine.

Thanks in advance.

This happened to me when I updated to 10.3.7. Had a FireWire drive still attached, don't know if this is what made it go hang at the Login Window.

Needless to say, nothing I did helped, only action was to do an Archive Reinstall. Check around, but this may be your only option.

The times TTP has hung on me during a defrag, it hosed the directory structure. I would run Disk Warrior just to be sure, though it's not likely to fix your specific issue. You may need to look at the /var/log/system.log file to see if you can figure out why the machine is hanging.
