In another forum (i posted in the wrong forum), i was asking about what virus software and firewall to use. At the moment i've no virus software or firewall.
Big Mac said: go to System Preferences, then click on "Sharing," then click on the Firewall button (under the Computer Name field). You'll then be able to click the Start button to turn the firewall on.
There doesnt seem to be a firewall button there (I'm running OSX version 10.1.2). Is it different on my version, or am i going blind?
Also, any other info on what i could do to protect re virus software, firewalls, etc.?
thanks.

It's been a while, so my memory may not be correct, but I seem to remember 10.1.x not having a GUI for the firewall. Your best bet will be to either go get a third-party GUI like BrickHouse ($25) or use the command line (involves knowledge of shell scripts).
And for heaven's sake, run Software Update. It's in System Preferences and will get you to 10.1.5, and will apply a lot of security updates. Without it, you may be vulnerable to some security holes somewhere.

One of the security updates actually updates Software Update to check the validity of packages. You may have to get this directly from the Apple site.

IIRC (and it's been a while, so I could be wrong), there was a certain Software Update that would update the Installer, and once Software Update installed that and you rebooted, then the rest of the updates would show up.

Yes, but I seem to recall having problems getting it to show up recently if you didn't have a certain version. I don't see many 10.1 machines anymore--fortunately.
