I've been setting up email servers and web interfaces lately.

I have user account info stored in a database so web interface is no problem. I'm wondering if there is a function or protocol for users to change their password remotly. From within OS X Mail or outlook for example, or something along the lines of those 3rd party apps that post a blog entry.

Is there such a thing?

The obvious method is using SSH and passwd, but you don't want to require users to log in via the command line...

If you have Kerberos up and running, the built in Kerberos application allows users to change their password.
