I plug in firewire HD, and it doesnt show up on desktop, or in finder. I open disk utility, and it says it's ok. I open carbon copy, and I can select it as one of the drives. Why doesn't the drive show up on the desktop or finder anymore?

Check your Finder preferences and make sure that it's set to show hard drives on the desktop.

I have an old Maxtor that sometimes does this as well.
Seems to be the trick is to wire the Maxtor up so all cables are in place, don't have any finder windows open and then turn it on and wait a few seconds until it appears on the desktop

Nudge (http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/14014) has helped in the past (but that may just be a coincidence)

Do you have problems with USB Flash Drives or iPod having problems being recognised (funny how we assume everyone has an iPod these days !)

Nudge didn't do it, even after a log out/log in. But, a reboot seemed to work just fine. Before the reboot, disk utility showed that I had 0 files and folders, which freaked me out. After reboot, everything is back to normal. Thanks for the help.

(The ipod also showed up just fine before the reboot, kinda wierd)
