Gentoo OSX is nothing more than installing Gentoo Portage onto OSX... Simple as that. And really cool, matter of fact, I'm a gentoo user on a PC, and I'm gonna install portage onto Panther as well.

Yeah I know what it is but I've heard things like it screws up your OS X install. I just want to make sure before Gentoo becomes a permanent part of my OS X install

Flamebait? I'm guessing you're joking around, but I can't let a comment like that just go by.

So, since I assume you do know about Gentoo, this is mostly targetted at those out there who don't and have heard this 'ricer' comment before.

Yes, Gentoo is designed to let you compile all of your apps from source, and yes, doing so might give you some very minor performance gains since you can compile the application specifically for your processor.

But, just the fact that you can install most packages as binaries instead of from source shows that the 'ricer' aspect of Gentoo isn't the only thing it has going for it.

On the contrary, Gentoo has one of the most easy to use, flexible, and powerful package management systems I have ever seen. After trying our RPM and apt among others, I could never go back.

Yeah, I've seen that page. It's hilarious.

But some people really do feel that way about Gentoo. There are crazies on both sides of the Gentoo fence. I just couldn't let it slide.

In theory, Gentoo OSX can't bust your setup because file collision protection is on by default. Of course, it's still being developed, and if you modify your config you can turn collision protection off...

I've always used Fink, but Gentoo has my interested piqued It works on Tiger too, which is nice
