Now that Tiger is supposed to arrive in April ( according to ThinkSecret), and since I'll be buying it right away, did I waste my money on iLife '05? Is it bundled?

No, it won't be bundled. iLife '04 was never bundled with Panther.

As it was released a few months after Panther this is not a shock. iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto are included though. If apple will update these select apps or remove them now that iLife is a source of revenue is a question.
I'm sure someone around here could answer this question.

I don't think iLife is even included with the Power Mac G5. Why would they throw away a revenue source and bundle it with Tiger?

Thats the real question. When they released the last OS there was no "iLife" revenue source. The only iApp that was not freely available was iDVD which only came bundled with DVD-R drive macs.
So now apple has this extra revenue source (iLife) but has been bundling and advertising some of the iApps with previous OS releases.
I don't know what they are going to do but that is the current situation as I see it. They might see iLife as a alternate (something is better then nothing) revenue source for those kinds of users who are not on top of the latest OS releases.
fyi: powermacs do ship with iLife

Apple has to bundle some form of iApps, and I think it would be pretty ridiculous to not include the most recent versions of those apps.
However, if Tiger is $129 and iLife is $79, that's like only charging $50 for the OS -- Might not be a good financial situation for Apple.
Maybe Tiger is going to be $159 or something like that? The iLife price did go up significantly this year, so there is precedence.

Wasn't iLife out when Panther was released?

It almost certainly won't include iDVD, and I would be surprised if it included iMovie. That said, there's a decent chance of it including iPhoto, and it will almost certainly include iTunes.
End result: there will probably be one or two apps, but probably not more than that.

There is precisely zero chance of it bundling iPhoto, and a 100% chance of it bundling iTunes.

Nope Panther came out in Oct 03, iLife was first released Jan 04. Then updated this year in Jan 05.
So thoughts on what will make it. iTunes is a given, I think iPhoto and iMovie have good odds. iDVD is definite no and probably same for garageband.

So there has been three versions then?
I stand corrected, thought there was only 04 & 05.

Well Panther included iMovie3 and iPhoto2. So I guess Tiger will come with the previous rev of iLife components. Such as iMovie 4 and iPhoto4.
iDvd4 might not be included, but they should do. Far enough not include the latest and greatest components, but at least give people the ability to do movies, dvds, etc.
This would be really sensible as it would give people a taste for ilife and might get them to upgrade to ilife 5. (to fix the bugs)

They're not going to include iLife with it (except iTunes). They only included it with Panther because it was free at the time. They won't include old version of software that they used to sell...that makes no sense. The OS and iLife are now different apps sold separately, simple as that.

I think Apple should pull a Microsoft and leave it as a separate product to buy. iPhoto and iMovie will be the lite versions while iTunes will be version 5.
Mac OS X Panther has iMovie 3.0, iPhoto 2.0, iTunes, and Garageband 1.0 [Newer macs only]

Hmm... I'm not sure what they should do as opposed to what they will do (Ok, I really could see them not including any iLife stuff). I guess not including it isn't a problem for most at this momemt in time as mac users will already have previous iLife revs ands switchers will have the new iLife stuff. But to me it seems a shame to have a OS that doesn't do what it used to.

I'm not sure I see why that would be pulling a Microsoft. It sounds like the opposite, actually: not unnecessarily tying things into the OS.

Tiger will not include GarageBand, iDVD, iPhoto or iMovie. It just wouldn't make sense. It also won't include Keynote or Pages go figure. Tiger is the OS. They bundle apps that are basic to the Mac OS experience. Apple is taking the stance that iLife is a perfect add on, not part of the OS. Apple's not going to reward you for waiting to buy iLife. Think about it this way, if you buy iWork, iLife, and OS X this year Apple makes a crap load of money off you. And if you buy iWork and iLife every year they'll make more. That said I think iLife and iWork should be offered as a bundle as well as stand alone versions, knock say 10 bucks off the price or so.

I agree, and I wouldn't mind a Tiger/iLife/iWork bundle either, for say $249
A few things for us to keep in mind: 1. You get all this with a new Mac. 2. Even at full price they are great values compared to what else is out there. 3. Apple has invested a lot of time and money in this software and need to make money, just like us. 4. Mac users tend not to upgrade to new systems as freqently as PC users because macs tend to stay viable longer. As a result, Apple is looking for intra-cycle ways of generating revenue, which makes perfect sense.

My thoughts:
iLife '05 and Tiger will be bundled with new macs (of course), but if you buy Tiger separate it will not include iLife apps, just the new OS.
I doubt apple would do anything different.

That sounds right, actually. You figure people buying the OS upgrade already have the apps (even if they're old versions)

Part of apple's big marketing ploy over MS etc is that a mac comes with the software you need for your digital life built in. I've bought two powerbooks in the last 2.5 years, both came with the ilife programs installed. You only got idvd if your mac had a superdrive though.
To remove ilife from the mac would cost them a lot of sales. It's how you convince people that the mac is good value.

Just to clarify:
PLEASE distinguish between Tiger and the software that's bundled with new Macs.
Tiger is an OPERATING SYSTEM UPGRADE. It is sold in a separate box for people who have older versions of the operating system on their Mac.
New Macs come with the latest Mac OS X (of course), as well as a software bundle that includes iLife, GraphicConverter, OmniGraffle, Microsoft Word Test Drive, AppleWorks (iMac/iBook/Mac mini only), Nanosaur (iXxx/Mac mini), etc. etc.
This thread does not concern applications bundled with new machines; the question is which of the iLife apps will be included when you buy the OS separately as an upgrade.

I somehow doubt that Tiger will include that, though, when you buy it as a separate product.

But Panther came with iLife. (I remember because it came with a version of iMovie that was freaking unusable on my iMac.)

More precisely, they were the first versions to be part of an iLife bundle, but they were still downloadable for free.

let us clarify what we are talking about here.
are we talking about buying Tiger at a retail store or something, and if the retail box will include iLife '05?
or are we talking about if you buy a new computer, with Tiger installed, if iLife '05 comes with it.
sounds like some of us are talking about completely different things. i think the original poster wanted the first question.

The newest version of iLife will come on a mac when you buy it. From there on out, you're going to be responsible for buying your own upgrades. Whether its Tiger, iLife '05, Final Cut Pro HD, whatever.
I don't see the logic in expecting Apple to ship any of these together, without making you pay.
