I've got a number of OS X computers and a couple of printers on the home network. One computer for the family has user accounts with me as the admin and the kids as users. The nice thing is that the user accounts can't install software or delete stuff, so I know the kids aren't gonna screw up the computer... but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to restrict printers. I've got a black & white laser printer set up as an IP printer and everybody can print to it. I've also got a color laser printer setup as a Rendezvous printer (and, also, an IP printer). The challenge I'm faced with is that the kids (5 & 7) end up printing a ton of stuff to the color printer - eating up a ton of ink. I'd like to be able to say that user x & y can print to the color printer, but users z & w cannot. Or I'd like to have a password on the printer. Or something.

Anyody have any creative ideas on how to lock down a particular IP printer? I'm not running OS X Server, just a few Macs with a router.

thanks - danbrew

You should be able to restrict which printer a user can print to in System Preferences > Accounts > Parental Controls.

There is actually a web-interface to Mac OS X's printer sharing (which is CUPS, an open-source project).

Visit: http://localhost:631/admin - use your administrator username and login

...however, there doesn't appear to be a way to limit printer usage to certain users.

Try this local link to set up quotas for a printer.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
