my ibook g3 on 10.3.8 has a built-in 128 & and additional 512 mb ram. Recently rather than 640, it displays only 384mb. So I took it out and reinserted, bootup, it detected and says 640 but whenever i restart computer it jumps back to 384 again any idea whats wrong ??

Such symptoms usually mean that the DIMM is defective. Get a replacement and things should be fine.
