Whenever I click on a dropdown menu from the bar (in or out of an app) the highlighted item starts uncontrollably cycling down through the list. I don't know what to do. Any help is appreciated!

That's weird. Maybe there's something wrong with your down arrow key. I can't think of anything else that would cause that problem.

Here's the first test: Does it happen in all users?

Yes. But try creating a new user, logging in as that user, and seeing if the problem happens to them.
If it doesn't you'll know it's something unique to your user account.

Sounds like something that happens with game consoles quite often: when you start up the game system but have the analog stick or the buttons pressed you'll get all sorts of weird things happening. For instance, if you have the analog stick pressed up when the console starts up but then later return it to the neutral position, the console will think you are pressing it down.
Anyway, not sure if the Mac OS handles the button similarly...maybe you had the down arrow depressed on startup?

To me it sounds a lot more like a bad wire somewhere, as you suggested.
Try a different keyboard? Maybe borrow one from work?

ya know it probably is the keyboard. I love it though. It's an old Apple pro keyboard that came with the cube. I need the usb ports though...

Honestly, this is where I would try that time tested repair technique that is suitable for all electronic devices.
Give the keyboard a good wack.
