Does putting the display to sleep using energy saver actually save energy?

I've been using Macs since the SE/30 and that question's never actually occurred to me before. Feel free to mock and point and laugh...

It does save energy, but for me, the benefit has always been in the fact that it'll help to reduce the chances of things getting burned into the screen.

And on an LCD, it also helps lengthen the lifespan of the backlight.
