hello all,

I'm experiencing a very slow login with my new G5 DP 2.0
I mention the G5, because my G4 doesn't have that problem.

Here goes:

If I have the mac connected to my router (with or without the modem on), after the login or restarting, It shows the doc and then the spinning wheel for about 45 seconds until the menu bar opens, etc...

That doesn't happen when I've disconnected the ethernet cable, it's fast as a bullet.

The funny thing, is that I've tried several system versions, and also from an external FW drive, and one doesn't have that problem, but is exactly the same version as others that I've tried (but I haven't still figured out their difference)...

Even a freshly installed system has the same problem

Here's an excerpt of the system log, and it has something to do with the localhost renaming (which I've also experienced when changing in the system prefs>sharing)

(--> Mar 15 10:38:29 localhost set-hostname[379]: setting hostname to powermacG5.local
Mar 15 10:39:10)

are your network settings using a DCHP server or a fixed IP? i changed mine to fixed IP and the speedy startup was back. try that.

Do you have any other Macs with the name powermacG5 as it stalls for 40 seconds when trying to set the hostname. Do you have any sharing turned on?

no, the other macs aren't even turned on... (and their names aren't the same in the network).
I've got the file sharing turned on, but disabling it didn't help...

I think I solved part of my problem...

I went to /etc/ and found duplicates of the hostconfig file (hostconfig.old and hostconfig~)

I removed those two, and restarted...

When the mac made the auto-login, it was very fast, and no lag at all...
but if I try to change the name of the mac when in the preferences>sharing, it takes those 40 seconds to do it, and the console reports this:

2005-03-15 16:15:53.399 System Preferences[396] ### Error:268451843 File:FileSharing.m Line:343

also,
I've noticed that the system console reports an error when I change the name in the sharing pane:

Mar 15 16:14:19 localhost set-hostname[467]: setting hostname to powermacG51.local
Mar 15 16:14:20 localhost mDNSResponder[162]: 10007: Client application registered 2 identical instances of service powermacG51._afpovertcp._tcp.local. port 548.

Do you have the hostname configured in /etc/hostconfig? This should be -AUTOMATIC-, unless you have a DNS server and a real DNS name set up.

ACSA 10.4/10.3, ACTC 10.3, ACHDS 10.3

the hostname is still in -AUTOMATIC-...
I think I might have other duplicate files...
but the slowness with the login is over, now it's only slow when changing the hostname, but that's not too bad, as I don't chmage it as often as I login
But I need to sort this out because it's the same as a car that works, but you ear that noise at the back and you *really* need to know what's going on...
