Here's the deal: we have proprietary software running on a 10.3 machine which is set to share printers. This software is allowing the Mac to run as a print spooler. The problem is that when the printer is set up so that Appletalk is turned on in concert with the sharing feature of the Mac hooked up to the printer, the printer, needless to say, shows up twice in the print list.

What I would like to do is turn off the Appletalk on the printer but keep the Mac acting as a print spooler. That way people only see the shared printer and are only allowed to print to the print spooler. Make sense?

Problem is: OS 9 doesn't see the printer when the Mac is sharing it. Other OS X machines do, but not any running OS 9. So, what does one do to enable printing to a shared out printer hooked up to an OS X Mac from OS 9?

Any help is welcome.

I believe printer sharing is based on redezvous (or "bonjour" now, I guess), which was not a networking protocol that OS 9 supported, iirc.

So I'm not sure you can, using "printer sharing"

You could try using the Laserwriter Desktop printer thingie (brain fart) and point it at localhost using LPR--don't rely on AppleTalk in OS 9.

Yes, that's the way to go.
Try the Mac Help (Finder > Help) and do a search for MacOS 9, there is an `article' about it.

In short: create an LPR printer on your MacOS X machine and write down the computer's (OS X) IP address (e. g. Utilities > Network Utility) as well as your printer queue's name that you have chosen.

Then create an LPR printer on your OS 9 machine. Follow the instructions in the MacHelp.
