Certain hardware (like my Belkin KVM switch) have driver/firmware updaters that only run under Windows. My question is twofold:
  1. Could one conceivably use the Terminal to install these drivers or firmware update?
  2. Is it worthwhile (in at least some cases) to do this even if the device is going to be used exclusively on or with a Macintosh?
The question is prompted by the fact that my KVM switch sometimes produces spurious characters as a type and I'd love to improve the accuracy via a firmware update from Belkin.

The firmware sounds like it's rapped up in a Windows app and Terminal won't help you.

Just because the firmware update procedure is Windows only it doesn't mean that you won't benefit from the firmware update.

- My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

My thought exactly and the reason for my initial post. Perhaps I could borrow a Windows-enabled laptop just to do the update?

Check to see if the firmware is updated via tftp. This has become fairly common, and there are plenty of ways of doing this on a Mac. You will have to get some information from the vendor (which they might not want to give), but it is another route.

It depends on the device.

I updated my wireless router with the tftp method. It's kind of like using ftp from the command line. You have to know the exact name and location of the file to replace.

You are generally dependent on the manufacturer to tell you how to do it. Sometimes you can find it by digging around on their website or PDF docs, sometimes you're S.O.L.

Linux guys are in the same boat and they tend to be more technical, someone may have figured it out without the company's help. The command line stuff is generally the same.

So try searching on the name of the device and add 'linux' and 'tftp'
