I just read this article by John Gruber. He talks about having a problem with slow login and discovered that it had a relationship to his font caché. He deleted everything except his plist so he could keep his favorites lists and preferences.
I looked at my caché files and was shocked. I have almost 200 files of the following:

Font tables Annex
ATSServerFODB
and
ATS.System

I don't have any issues with my fonts but am wondering if this is strange or normal. I have about 250 fonts in Font Book.

I had the same slow log-in problem that John Gruber had, and his tip fixed the problem for me.

I had 3-5 copies of some of those files, but not 200! I have no idea under what conditions OS X makes a new cache file, but I'm sure you can go ahead and delete them.

Used Onyx to clean my font caché. Everything is fine and it got rid of all of those files.

Now, it appears that Word and Excel open a bit faster.

caché means having extra style or prestige

cache is a storage place, and in computer terms is a place to put a copy of things in order to speed them up. This latter is the word you should be using.

Actually, that's spelled cachet.
