I just read this article by John Gruber. He talks about having a problem with slow login and discovered that it had a relationship to his font cach�. He deleted everything except his plist so he could keep his favorites lists and preferences.
I looked at my cach� files and was shocked. I have almost 200 files of the following:

Font tables Annex
ATSServerFODB
and
ATS.System

I don't have any issues with my fonts but am wondering if this is strange or normal. I have about 250 fonts in Font Book.

I had the same slow log-in problem that John Gruber had, and his tip fixed the problem for me.

I had 3-5 copies of some of those files, but not 200! I have no idea under what conditions OS X makes a new cache file, but I'm sure you can go ahead and delete them.

Used Onyx to clean my font cach�. Everything is fine and it got rid of all of those files.

Now, it appears that Word and Excel open a bit faster.

cach� means having extra style or prestige

cache is a storage place, and in computer terms is a place to put a copy of things in order to speed them up. This latter is the word you should be using.
