I recently bought a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet and decided to install a copy of 10.2 on it. I did not have a direct install disk for 10.2 so I ended up using OS X to be installed and then to upgrade to 10.2. During the install the computer froze up and the status bar refused to continue moving. I at first thought this might just be the computer taking a litle bit of time to work through a file. Instead the bar didn't end up moving for a couple of hours. I decided to quicly pull the battery to reset the install. The install restarted and I decided to allow the installation program to erase all data on the drive in order to prevent problems with the partial data from the last install. The run was going to take awhile so I had to leave and I just left it running. I came back to find a white screen with the gray apple logo in the middle. This screen failed to change for about 4 hours. So I decided to unhook the battery again and to restart again. Now the computer is restarted it brings up the white screen with the gray apple logo and it just freezes. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Also, on the Wallstreet, you have to install onto a partition wholly contained within the first 8Gb of the HD. 10.0-10.1 installers didn't check this and allowed you to install on a partition which may have been outside of this range. 10.2 installer refuses to install on a partition outside of the range, but not sure about the updater.
If your HD is larger than 8Gb, make sure your partitions are good.
As for 10.3, it can be installed on the Wallstreet using XPostFacto. Just not officially supported by Apple, but it seems to run just as well as 10.2.

Check the simple stuff too. Is the CD dirty or scratched?

Try deleting (or renaming) the files:
/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
/System/Library/Extensions.mkext
I think it's the latter of these two which is causing the problem.
Edit: The Wallstreet seems to be different than other Mac's with respect to the mkext file; it seems to be more susceptible to problems. Other Mac's appear more resilient. I suspect this could have something to do with the fact that the Wallstreet is one of the few, if not the only, MacOS X-capable Mac with Old World ROMs.
Prior to Jaguar, this file did not get automatically rebuilt on the Wallstreet (as on other Mac's) if the file was missing at boot-up.
