I had the logic board replaced under warranty in my Rev A 1Ghz 17" powerbook, 768MB RAM, 10.3.8. Everything worked fine for ~3 weeks.
I wanted to install YD Linux on my external fw drive so I launched the install and only advanced to the point where it asked for destination disk, no partition, formatting, etc. The install didn't see the fw drive so I properly quit the install. This may or may not have caused problems.
Around the same time I started playing WoW again on and off.
I had the first kernel panic when playing a .wmv movie in media player. Then after that I started getting them on startup on the grey screen.
I get them during WoW.
I get them on dock mouse overs while the disk is still loading stuff.
Sometimes the computer gets past boot up and the screen stays and goes black.
The only troubleshooting I have done is booting the OS from my FW drive 10.3.8. I wanted to test to see if it was a OS issue. I got a kernel panic in WOW very soon after starting.
I have reset the PRAM several times since sometimes it crashes on the grey screen.
I checked the system and console log. The console log looks for a scanner about 10 times before giving up, I used my neighbors Canon LIDE50.
Call FindDev()
allocate memory for Scanner Private Context
Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8723
The system log has a few repetitive errors as follows:
Mar 24 09:12:01 localhost kernel: ASC::checkProperties ERROR: failed to find platform-set-frequency-high
Mar 24 09:12:01 localhost kernel: ASC::start ERROR: failed to find the properties
Mar 25 07:51:06 localhost SystemStarter: The following StartupItems failed to properly start:
Mar 25 07:51:06 localhost SystemStarter: /System/Library/StartupItems/CrashReporter
Mar 25 07:51:06 localhost SystemStarter: - execution of Startup script failed
Mar 25 07:51:06 localhost SystemStarter:
Mar 25 07:51:06 localhost SystemStarter: Startup complete.
It seems to me to be hardware issue because my internal OS install and fw OS install both panic. The fw drive is a minimal install that I used on my old powerbook while this one was in for repair. I seems like bad video memory, since most the panics happen on video init or video intensive tasks.
My questions are, is there any other logs, troubleshooting, etc that I can try? Is there something similar to a master boot record in open firmware that can be reset (in case YD Linux made some entry) or anything else that can be reset besides the PRAM?
My powerbook is out of warranty but the logic board is under the 90 day warranty till the end of May. I want to be as sure as possible it's the logic board before sending it off for another 3 week repair.
