i just installed a program and it is now the default of two others like it. is there a way to change the default to the program that i like more? i looked in the prefs of the three and found no such way of changing this.

Your question is a little unclear to me. Do you want to change which application opens a document? If so:

Get Info on the document
In the Open With section, change the application to the one you want
Click Change All if you want to apply this setting to all like document types
