Hi,

I haven't had that much experience with OS X and I'm struggling with something that I'm sure is very simple. I'd like to be able to set universal keyboard shortcuts to add characters for typing French essays. I'm fine typing in Word, but I can't get things like acute accents or the circumflex when typing in webpages or games. I've had a look in the keyboard preferences menu and can see how to add shortcuts to open applications, but not to produce individual characters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Here's a more complete set for la belle langue:

acute accent: option-e + vowel (é)
grave accent: option-tilde + vowel (à)
circumflex: option-i + vowel (û)
diaeresis: option-u + vowel (ë)
cedilla: option-c (ç)
oe ligature: option-q (œ)
guillemots: option-\ and shift-option-\ (« and »)

If you do a lot of French typing, you might consider getting either a French keyboard, or a Matias keyboard with the alternate characters marked on the keys (see tactilepro.com).
