This question may seen bizarre, so bear with me. I have a set location that I like some of my desktop icons to be, for the sake of reducing clutter. Some I prefer on the right side, some on the left. Sometimes, my desktop gets cluttered up, usually when I switch from the high resolution external monitor to my powerbook's built-in screen. Obviously, when I select Arrange Icons, it moves everything over to their default positions on the right side. Is there any way to "teach" MacOS that certain icons go different places, so when I arrange the icons, it moves the ones that go elsewhere other than the right side to their correct locations?

Nope. Finder's arrangement is always on the right. You might submit a feature request to Apple, though as you said, it's kind of odd.

You could write an applescript that would modify the "position" attribute of everything on the desktop., It would be a lot of work, but if it bothers you enough... (annoyance being the true mother of invention)
