I am waiting to order a powerbook and an ibook until they announce tiger, but this is killing me. If I order today, I suspect that I might get the powerbook by Friday, based on their shipping estimates. I am really anxious to get it by this weekend, since my wife will be out of town, and I can spend some quality time with it, guilt free. I am a Mac noob, so I really want to play with it.

I am just afraid that by ordering it before the official announcement, I will screw up my "free" upgrade to Tiger.

Any thoughts on whether it is safe to order right now??

Thanks,
Jeff

As has been said in the numerous threads that have described the update policy: if Apple does the same as it has in the past, you will not be eligible for the "free" update unless you buy the Mac after the Tiger announcement (or a specific date mentioned in the announcement). If you buy now, you are pretty much guaranteed to have to pay full price.

And even the free upgrade isn't free: it's $20 "shipping", and it also means that any time you want to do a total reinstall to a blank disk, you've gotta install Panther first, then upgrade to Tiger. Sure you can Archive and Install to make it a clean copy, but what a pain.

I say wait until the Mac you want is shipping with Tiger preinstalled.

I am not so sure about this I thought apple has retrograde 2 weeks in the past for other people during the "i bought a new machine just before panther" timeframe...

if you buy today (wiat for tommorrow to be sure) then we are looking at 2 weeks until the 18th which, if, is not the day then i am going just give up.

2 weeks backwards from 18th = today = $20 upgrade?

Only apple knows for sure but i hope for a tues anounce of something tommrororw...

can others chime in if they bought a mac just before panther...

Thanks, Tooki

Not the answer that I was hoping for, but it is the safe route, it seems. I guess I will just try to hurry up and wait.

Jeff

EDIT: Uh-oh. osxisfun, you are throwing in another wrinkle. Still safer to wait, I guess. I will pull the trigger, most likely, once the official announcement is made.

Rest assured: Apple will announce Tiger two days after you buy the PowerBook.

That's how it always seems to work for me, anyway

It'll be here soon. That said, make sure your Machine comes shipping with Tiger otherwise your upgrade'll be a hassle if you need to reinstall.

In all fairness, I was able to get the Panther upgrade for free, despite having bought it before the deadline. But it was just luck, I think. Nothing to be counted on.
