Hi all.

Any advise on this would be much appreciated.

I have been using a 17" 1.33 PowerBook for a couple of years as my main work computer. It has been feeling very very sluggish (especially in comparison to the G5 desktop I have in the office, but also, interestingly, compared to my old G4 at home souped up with a 1.25 Ghx card from OWC).

This week the ethernet port on my PowerBook fried and yesterday I ran out and got a new iMac G5 20", to keep everyhting running at work while the PB gets fixed, and also because it was an opportunity to put myself on a faster working computer.

I put the PB in firewire target disk mode and imported everything to the new iMac G5.

I cam in today to fiddle some more and get some work done, and to my surprise, the iMac G5 feels similarly sluggish to the PowerBook it is replacing.

That makes me think the problem must be software related?

The G5 desktop feels like a jet compared to this.

RAMwise I am still at the default amount, I've ordered 2 Gigs. But the sluggishness is in basic GUI stuff even with nothing running.

I thought maybe Stuffit Deluxe 8.0 was the culprit (it's menu function bogging things down?) but I can't figure out how to uninstall it (still in all the menus etc.). Anyone know how to do this?

Also anyone know what could be causing this effect?

This machine should rip compared to my laptop, be really snappy like the G5 desktop, it's got to be a software problem I imported from my PB, because like I said, the PB was sluggish even compared to a slower G4 at home with equal RAM.

Thanks for any thoughts......

Cheers

Scott

Did you use the Migration Manager to transfer your files?

Create a new user. Is the system sluggish when logged in as this user as well? (don't use fast user switching for this test)

Thanks guys.....

I created a new account. Everything felt snappier but still not as limber as I'd expect based on my other G5.

One note: in the test identity, right-clicking on a file to get the drop-down menu gave me a beachball for maybe 5 seconds and then the whole finder dissapears and reappears. Im my master identity, right-clicking gives me a beachball for maybe 9 seconds but then lets me select an option from the drop-down menu. (I don;t know why I keep wondering if Stuffit 8 is the culprit.... how do I wipe it from my system completely?...)

I did the transfer using the prompts on the initial boot of the G5 iMac using firewire disk target mode on my old PowerBook. I took everything it gave me the option to take. Application, settings, etc.... it took about 5 hours.

Have a look into both <harddisk>/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ and <youraccount>/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ (in your test account this folder should not exist or be empty, but in your regular account there might be something in it).

Move everything that might be in these folders out. Then reboot and the crash when right-clicking a file should be fixed.

With 256 MB RAM a certain sluggishness is to be expected. When you have your additional RAM you can make an Archive & Install and then (at least in new users) you have a untouched system that should not be sluggish.
