I am having a hard time understanding this:

"For computers without a programmable GPU, Core Image dynamically optimizes for the CPU, automatically tuning for Velocity Engine and multiple processors as appropriate."

Fine. So I guess that means if your card can't handle it the CPU will do it. BUT does it do the same effect?

For example I saw on the Dashboard demo when you drop new widgets onto your screen it does a fancy water ripple effect. If you on on an old 500MHz iBook does it still try to do this effect very slowly or does it just drop it altogether.

What about a Dual G4? Does it do a less fancy effect?

Computers without suitable GPUs will only be able to use the CoreImage ImageUnits - the Photoshop-like filters.

Those fancy ripple effects and transitions need a graphics card.

CoreImage is an API which (amongst other things) features more than a 100 filters available for developers to integrate into their apps - once Tiger ships it will be as easy for your average progger to create a PS kock off as it is now to create a webkit web browser.

As devs have had a year or more to play with this functionality, there will almost certainly be some very cool apps being announced before the 29th.
