So far, no version of OS X has required a serial. I doubt that'll change at this point.

If Tiger were to be serialized, then this fact would almost certainly have been leaked by now, and the uproar would have been enormous. It's probably safe to assume that it has not been serialized.

Tiger is not serialized.

Tiger Server, as all previous versions of Mac OS X Server, is serialized.

True. G5 PowerMac cd's didn't install on G4 Macs.

I'm probably going to buy Mac Mini just for the software(and to use it as ssh/vnc server), luckily EULAs do not apply in Finland, which makes me wonder why does Apple sell Tiger family pack in here at all...

Because they're hoping that just because there's not a law forcing people they'll still choose to be ethical and moral.

I just bought a new PB G4 last week. I remember asking the folks in the shop (TekServe, the awesomely helpful NYC Mac shop) if there was any way to get Tiger free/cheap when it finally came out. They were skeptical but said, "You never know."

Does anybody know if Apple takes pity on suckers like me who bought a new machine within weeks of a major OS release? Or am I stuck paying $129 like everyone else?

Am posting this here because if the OS isn't serialized I might, um...find other ways to acquire it. I'd rather be above-board if possible, though, and would pay something. Just don't think it's entirely fair to have to pay full freight.

I did the same thing, but I knew I'd be buying it for all my other macs so it didn't bother me.

Some guy on /. said he got the lady on the phone to give it to him. Others sait no. My guess is you are s.o.l.

But it is totally fair to steal it, right?

And no, I am not perfect, and I am not hollier than thou, so don't use that in some sort of pathetic attempt at justifying stealing the software. If you are going to steal then be a man (or a woman) and say you stealing it. This is not directed at anyone posting above me, but at the inevitable justifications that will follow.

You have to take your copy of Tiger to the SPCA to get it "fixed."

so the next mac i buy will be my first mac (been sort of waiting for tiger to come out since it was going to be so soon), so don't be annoyed at my newb question -- but i gather that mac stuff ships with a full install CD for the OS as opposed to just this "clean install" HD wiping ******** i got with my toshiba. and that same CD can be installed on other macs.

specifically: mini w/ tiger and want to install tiger on ibook purchased last august.

I read somewhere that you can only get Tiger as a free replacement for Panther if you order your hardware between the 14th and 29th. Otherwise you are S.O.L. I would call Apple Sales and find out, I am sure they have been asked plenty of times already.

Considering you need a Mac purchased from Apple to run OS X, I don't think they will serialize the OS. Naturally they would rather have you buy the OS, but worst case, they would rather have you steal the OS if it means that you buy more hardware. Some people wouldn't buy the OS if it was $20 just to satisfy the H^x0r in them. Naturally I promote buying the OS as being an ethical Mac user.

Microsoft serializes their OS and it's all over the place.

I've got 5 systems to load the OS on so I'm supporting Apple and buying the Family Pack Version. They work so hard and put out great products they deserve the buisness.

Assuming that you are talking about April, I think it is the 12th, since that is the day it was announced. I am not sure about the 29th, other than the fact that is the release date.

Yes, well because we're talking about M$, the big Satan, etc., stealing their OS is the only ethical thing to do. In fact, it would be unethical to pay M$ any $$$ for anything!

Final Cut Express and SoundTrack also require serial numbers. I'm sure the new versions of Logic/Logic Express do as well.

I am also buying the Family Pack from Amazon. With a $50 rebate, it's almost like stealing it.

I doubt Tiger will serialize. If you own a Mac, you paid for it, Apple already has your money. They'd rather have people not pay and have the OS and think Apple is awesome and see a reason to upgrade, than have em turn to Windows.

They might make one. It is kinda funny that ilife is not but iwork is.
