I have an old iBook with both OS 9 and OS X 10.0 on it (one of the old ones that shipped with both), onto which i want to install OS X 10.2

When I try to install it I insert the first disc and things seem to go fine for a while until about half way through when it unexpectedly quits with no explanation.

The discs I am using are copies of the original installation discs, however I know they are OK as I made the backups myself from the originals, so I don't think it's the discs that are the problem.

Any ideas?

If you say old iBook, is it a clamshell model or a white dual USB iBook?

Does the machine pass the Apple Hardware test?

I would suggest you do the following:

1. Run the Apple Hardware Test.
2. Try another set of install CDs.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thanks for the advice. I ran the hardware test and it passed everything fine, but still the same problem with the discs. I have even tried two sets of copied discs but get the same problem with both. Has Apple managed to put some kind of protection on it's OS discs so that you can't back them up? That's how it seems... anyone know if this is the case?

Did you try updating the firmware on it (if possible)?

It's a dual USB iBook (the first all white one), which according to the apple site does not need a firmware update.

Are you getting a kernel panic or is it just a complete restart/shutdown?
