yup, and also, tiger ships with DVD Player 4.5 (so i heard), so 4.6 update will be with the 10.4.1 update I guess.

theres usually a .1 update soon after a major release, as theres always a cut off date for declaring GM, then any small unresolved bugs just go into the x.x.1 update
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Note that DVD Studio Pro is shipping in "4-6 weeks".

That 10.4.1 would show up within a month after Tiger's release is expected.

I feel for all those people on dial up.

But as a high speed person... the more updates the better!

I agree.. I too feel very sorry for those not part of the highspeed-connection world. I tried dialup once.. man, i'm never doing that again. I just got an upgrade to 2,5mbit so i'm happy.

I also say the more updates the better

Give me 10.4.0 first, then we can talk about 10.4.1.

Don't see why they couldn't have worked another month and fixed more problems before shipping. May is still within the first half of 2005.

They clearly felt that what they had was ready to ship, and it's better to ship a good product than to hold off for some undefined level of "betterness."

For the same reason they didn't wait until last week to release Panther, to get it to the level where 10.3.9 is today.

Look at 10.3. Over a year later they are still pumping out updates.

If they would have held out to fix every little thing we would never get it.

Except again, May is within their "first half of 2005" Tiger deadline. I was deliberate in pointing that out so one would not think I was saying "they should take all the time in the world and fix everything". With Panther they committed to a specific release date and had to be done with it by then.

With an OS release, it is important that whatever ships is stable and working enough to rely on for people who are not able to update it easily. It becomes a permanent release for people without an internet connection. And it becomes the fallback install for people who go through reformatting, etc. Reading about software Apple announced yesterday requiring a point update for an OS that has not even shipped yet is somewhat disturbing.

Bingo, at some point, you just need to say "ship it"

I think Microsoft tries to "get it perfect" before they ship... and here you are, years behind, unloading features left and right and nowhere near perfect.

Look at it from a financial standpoint: If they release it at the end of this month, they have two full months to sell Tiger and have that revenue included in their quarter financials. Now, were they to release it later, say late May, those numbers have the possibility of being drastically lower.

As far as the software requirements, RevEvs pointed out that the .1 update will introduce DVD Player 4.6, which is also a requirement for the software in question. So, it may very well be that the software in question merely requires DVD Player 4.6, and not necessarily bug fixes found in the .1 update. This, however, is simply speculation on my part

The other things are:

1) Apple has hardware to get out the door. It's probably already ready, and a Tiger release in April allows that new hardware to ship with Tiger. By the time you actually receive that hardware in your hands in May, 10.4.1 will be out with all the fixins, while in the meantime...

2) Developers are already working on a release version of Tiger. WWDC is in early June. What better way to have kickass new 3rd party Tiger apps at WWDC than to have the Tiger gold master available to them several months before?

If they released later indeed the numbers for this quarter would be lower, but that would not have an effect on long-term sales. Any money they do not make this quarter they would simply make in the next. I guess it's just a matter of how much better they want to make one quarter look.

Perhaps the software merely does require DVD Player 4.6, but in "the year of HD" it seems omitting a feature required for something-HD in a retail release is not a good decision.

Good points I did not consider. It would suck to purchase a new Power Mac (or whatever will supposedly be announced tomorrow) with 10.3.x only to have 10.4 come out a month and a half later (although I do not think that has stopped them from doing it before).
Genius. You know who.
