Tiger requires Serial # to Install

I noticed that Tiger is available in a Family Pack (for 5 computer installs) or a Single Person version. If Tiger doesn't have a serial # preventing users from multiple installs, i would assume that nobody would spend the extra $100 to get the family pack.

These leads me to believe that Tiger will have a serial number and force people to purchase the Family Pack. Can anyone shed light on this?

Apple has never required a serial number to install the OS and there has been no indication that Tiger will be any different. They've always assumed that most people will do the right thing, and those who buy the Family Pack are doing exactly that.

You could buy a Panther family pack. No serial for Panther.

The sames scenario is true for Panther, and it is not serialized.

A foreign concept to many--I'm sure.

Or, more cynically, since you need Apple hardware to run their OS, they don't have much to lose if someone installs their copy on more than one machine.

Those of us who are honest would.

Well, they sold 1 million Mac last quarter. Let's assume that 25% of those were second machines.

Gosh you're right - they would only stand to lose $32.25 million.

My point is, you're already locked into the Apple Experience™ whether you purchase a legitimate license for the software or not. That means you're much more likely to buy more expensive products (with higher profit margins) later on. By being both a hardware and a software company (and by making their software work only with their hardware), Apple doesn't experience the same kinds of pressures that Microsoft does when determining whether or not to serial-protect the OS.

hasn't this whole topic been beaten to death a thousand times over already?

and to the original poster - perhaps your thread title should have had a ? at the end instead of making it look like you are stating a fact.

The 5 user copy and the 1 user copy are the exact same disk. The only difference is the paperwork and the 5-user sticker on the box.
