a more concise question than my last post: I'm booted into console mode. what is the command to launch the gui?
-> 20" iMac Core Duo, 1GB RAM, lame superdrive that burns at 2x
-> MacBook Pro 2GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM
-> MacBook 2.16GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM

that currently just relaunches the console. :/
-> 20" iMac Core Duo, 1GB RAM, lame superdrive that burns at 2x

you should be able to exit and reboot into the gui with the command 'reboot'

Then I think we need a better definition of what you mean by "console mode." In single user mode, exit will quit the shell you are using and continue the bootup process. If you type >console at the login window, exiting out will also restart the WindowServer/loginwindow stuff. If under a normal boot, you are going to a command-line login, there is something else going on. You should check the log files and look for corrupt preference files. Also, DiskWarrior may find overlapped files. You should save the DiskWarrior report *before* telling it to replace, and then delete any overlapped files that are listed. If these are important OS files, you will need to reinstall.
