Dear members,
I would be interested to know if there are any 3rd party app which offer the same functions as spotlight in tiger. As I don't plan to purchase tiger, this is why I ask this question.
I'm interested in searching for bookamrked words of pdf files mainly. I used to have this sort of function on OS 9 and sherlock 2 when the HD is indexed...
Thanks for your suggestion

The search function in Panther works similarly to the one in OS 9.

However, google is working on an OS X version of google desktop which roughly offers the same functionality as Spotlight. However, it probably won't be integrated as well.

For the PC it literally gives the built-in Windows search a run for the money.

Could that possibly be because the built-in search in Windows is close to useless?

Well I'm sure Google desktop search for mac is a winner. The important thing when you search isn't a simple retrieve of the things you're looking sinked in many other files. The important thing is the 'clever' search just like what google implements in its Gmail service. I don't know if spotlight is that clever.

What's cool about Spotlight is that it's integration goes both ways.
It doesn't just index stuff.

For instance, when I search on a string like "Munin" it shows all the files that contain the text--but, when I click on a PDF I wrote, it also forwards the search information to preview.app so that the searched for text is already highlighted in preview.app.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.
