We have two macs here at home, so we will be pre-ordering the 5 user licesne for $199 (vs. $139 per license). Will this 5 user license come with 5 install CD's or only one? Also, each time I install it, will it be registered in my name? Or will my brother be able to register his copy in his name, etc.?

I always buy the family edition and it comes with 1. You just can install it on 5 computers in a home.

yes, but will that one cd allow for users to register under separate names on separate computers? I'm planning on buying the family pack also.

When you install, you can register with Apple and give whatever name you want. It's not linked to any serial number or product activation mechanism.

I'd think that most families have people with different names in the household.

Anyone know if a single user license for Tiger would be good for installing on both my desktop and laptop in a one person household?
Most all software l have bought support this -- as it is just me using the software on either the desktop or laptop at any one time.

The "one desktop, one laptop" license is fairly rare nowadays. A quick look over at Apple's site did not turn up the EULA, so I can't say for certain. But I am %95 sure that you will need 2 licenses with 10.4. Apple does offers the family pack (5 licenses) that still costs less than 2 copies.

While it is not uncommon for "software" to accommodate the 1 desktop, 1 laptop scenario it is different when you are talking about the operating system itself. The OS is virtually always a "per computer" (not per user) license. So in your case (same as mine) it is the family pack you need to buy if you want to install on both your computers.

I don't know about Tiger, but since the original days of OS X you could install a single copy on an infinite amount of computers since there is no serial number activation or whatever. Though it is most likely violating the EULA, it can be done.

Why are you bringing this up? Don't, even backhandedly, encourage people to pirate. There is no "most likely" involved, and you obviously know that.

The laptop/desktop rule is long since dead with people using laptops as primary machines.
That said, my family will be getting the 10.4 family pack to replace the 10.2 family pack.
I'm on 10.3, but only because my computer came with it.
I'll upgrade in early June once some of the bazillion bugs are fixed.
