Aloha,
I'm still not convinced that Tiger, at least for now, is the right update for me. I know it sounds like I'm fresh off the turnip truck, but I've been on 10.2.6 for almost 2 years now and it has been an absolute joy. Never crashes, never freezes, does absolutely everything I need and does it exceptionally well.
I don't see an upside to Tiger, at least for my usage. Dashboard seems ho hum. Safari RSS is no big deal to me, I love Net News Wire Lite. Spotlight sounds cool, but that's about it. And there are no applications that I need or use that require anything beyond Jag.
Thus I'm thinking of waiting a year for Tiger to mature before upgrading. I don't want to hassle with bugs, I'd rather wait to get a mature Tiger version of the mature Jag that I have now. Here are a couple of questions:
1) Let's say by a year Tiger evolves to 10.4.5 or so. Will the Tiger DVD's on sale then still only have 10.4, or do they release 10.4.X DVD's at somepoint? How was it with Panther? I ask this because being on dialup makes it a pain to go from 10.4 to 10.4.5.
2) I'm on 10.2.6. For fun, I may update a partition to 10.2.8. Do I have to go through 10.2.7 first? I can't find a listing for 10.2.7 at Apple.com, just 10.2.6 and 10.2.8. Will 10.2.8 take me from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8? 10.2.8 lets me play Railroad Tycoon
Thanks!

1. They usually have a recent version on the disks, though not generally the most recent. I think current Panther CDs have 10.3.6 on them — somebody would have to confirm the exact number, but it's newer than 10.3.0, anyway.
2. The 10.2.8 combo updater will upgrade any version of Jaguar.

Thanks for the reply.
The combo update is really huge for dialup, the regular 10.2.8 would be easier. If I have 10.2.6 and there is no 10.2.7 on Apple's website, shouldn't the regular 10.2.8 update be sufficient?
I found this article at Apple.com:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25524
Doesn't it say I don't need the combo? Or is there some other reason why the combo should be used instead?

I checked my Software Update, it lists the regular 10.2.8 (40 MB) as my next update, no 10.2.7 is listed. Does that mean I can avoid the 100MB combo update?
Is there any advantage to using the stand alone download off Apple.com instead of Software Update?

My memory might not be correct on this one but I think 10.2.7 was pulled because of a few bugs. It went straight from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8.

Yep, looks like the normal updater would work. Though I'd say they're both leave-it-downloading-overnight updates.
And no, there's no particular reason to use one over the other between Software Update and the standalone updater. They're essentially the same thing.

Is 10.2.8 a safe update?
What about Java 1.4.1, is that safe?
I've essentially never updated anything since I bought my Mac 2 years ago

They are both very good updates as far as I remember. I don't recall anyone complaining.

10.2.7 was the update only for G5's if I recall.

Off topic, but I see you live in HI. Do they even offer any high speed net there? If so, how does that work? In fact, how does the net connect to Europe? Do they have underwater cables?

I upgraded to Panther when it was released and have already ordered Tiger. For me the responsiveness of OS X has improved with each release from 10.0 to 10.3 and from what I've read Tiger is no different. The extra features are "nice", but the overall increase in performance is more important for me. One might argue that OS X should have been faster from the start though I stopped using OS 9 after Jag came out.

If you don't need the bells and whistles of Tiger - but want a more responsive, refined, mature OS version - why not try and pick up a discounted copy of Panther after Tiger is released?
I've found 10.3 to be very stable with generally better performance and many more refinements than 10.2.

you could update safely
10.2.8 is greater than 10.2.6
what is your mac?
i ve got an imac DV 400 with 384MB of RAM and 10.3.9 works like a charm!
and with this release i came back to safari. i always prefer its GUI but it wasn't usable as Firefox is on my mac. safari 1.3 is a great release.
you can go ahead i think you won't regret.
concerning java, i always find it slower on my mac than on XP

Actually the 10.2.7 system version was installed on the iMac G4 1.25GHz models. It was the first OS version to allow for USB 2.0 support and that was the first iMac with USB 2.0.

I may keep an eye out for a discounted version of Panther. Thing is, absolutely everything I need to do works flawlessly with 10.2.6. Panther and Tiger, no matter how good they are, cannot improve upon a 100% success rate. They may match it, but can't beat it. And there's the risk, read through the Tiger threads and there are a gazillion bugs listed.
Would I like a more responsive OS, sure. I don't do video editing, the most intensive uses for me are lightweight PhotoShop and the stray game. A few seconds (or less) of more responsiveness are not worth the risk of inviting in larger problems.
I would love to buy Mackiev's 3D Weather Globe that does require Panther. But that's it, that's the only reason I'd have to upgrade, I just don't see the upside.
There's a fever that engulfs these boards when a new OS is released. I'm just providing a less empassioned point of view, a kindly anti-Tiger perspective

The one nice thing about Apple's OS updates so far is that they've all gotten FASTER, not slower. 10.3.9 is way faster on the same hardware as 10.2.8 was (is).
Don't know about Tiger, but Panther is definitely an improvement over 10.2.x.
