I managed to buy one of the early copies for $150, but I'm having trouble installing it on my ibook.

When I insert the disc and click on "Install Mac OS", it shows a button to restart. After restarting, Panther boots normally and Tiger doesnt install. I tried holding C during the boot process, it looked like the ibook was reading from the disc but after a few seconds Panther starts to boot. I also tried using the Startup Disk utility and specifying the disc as the boot drive, still same result.

What other options can I try ? Can I make a small partition (5GB) and copy the disc on that partition and begin the install from there, will this work ?

I just want to install it as early as possible as I paid $20 extra for it.

The person I bought it off suggested I seek help from here, PLEASE HELP

Sure, we'll help. As soon as you post some nice pics of the box held up next to your face.

Looks like you got a bad disc. I'd return it and get your $150 back.

Yep, sounds like a bad pressing (if it is indeed a pressing) if it won't boot from the disc.

Well, assuming you can boot from any other disk. (And if that's not the case, I'd say you have bigger problems.)

Hahahaha....

Burn the disc using "Disk Utility" and not "Toast".

LMAO!

Thats my only option but that way, my shelling out the extra would have gone useless.

Sorry I cant provide any box shots as I dont have a digicam.

And I dont know what you mean by 'Disk Utility' or 'Toast', do I have to mount it on some partition ?

use option key on startup, and select the Mac OS X disk.
If panther runs after a reading of the dvd, then return the box.

I thought of that, but it's not usually more effective than using the Startup Disk prefpane (I almost called it a control panel — man, 22 and I'm already stuck in the past).

The pirated disk image from BitTorrent will not boot unless it is burned with Disk Utility - a program included with OS X.

Ok then, I guess you are genuine.

If clicking Restart when prompted, try what the other posters have suggested:-

- Selecting the DVD as the startup disk in "Startup Disk" under "System Preferences"

- Hold down the "Alt" (aka "Option") key when you turn on your Mac with the DVD inserted until you see a screen appear with an icon of your hard disk and your DVD disc, it may take a minute of two to appear - then select the disk you want to boot from and click the arrow to continue.

If the DVD disk fails to appear at this screen, then your computer's firmware cannot see it. There can be a number of reasons that may be happening. Try resetting the NVRAM (the Apple+Alt+P+R key combo at startup).

Just out of curiousity, what model iBook are you running? Is it modified in anyway? Have you installed any 3rd party hacks (e.g. the screen-spanning hack?).

We can safely rule out that you are not trying to run the DVD in a CD-ROM drive (as someone tried to do in another thread) since you were able to launch the installer in the first place.

Also, not overlooking the obvious - try booting from the CD or DVD that accompanied your Mac - that can help us rule out if the problem is isolated to the Tiger disc.

Whom did you buy this supposed $150 copy of Tiger from?

It was probably a pirated copy, and apparently not even burned properly at that. I think you got taken.

Anyway, this is a Tiger support thread, so it'll probably be locked quite soon...

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Returning is the last option as I already paid extra for getting it early.

analogika, Kerrigna: I'm not able to install from the retail DVD, you expect me to make a pirated one work ? lol

Thanks for all the help, I'll see if that works.

Charles, I dont think its a pirated copy, the box, manuals, DVD look genuine. I bought it from my bf's friend.

edit: I just read the Tiger support thread, sorry I didnt know Tiger support is not allowed. delete this thread.

If you read his post carefully, you'll notice he said 'early' copy - as in the MacMall orders.

If the copy is legit, I have no problem with this thread. Question is: do you have an original retail box?

"Early" copy could mean anything. MacMall doesn't charge $150, so I figured it wasn't them. Now that it turns out to be some jerk trying to make a $20 profit off this person, well...

If the DVD is bad, the only thing you can do is trade it in for a new, good one. And by the time you got it back, it'd probably be after the 29th anyway. So I'd return this, get your $150 back, order a $129 copy from Apple, and save 20 bucks.

I'm not sure if this question is relevant, but are you male or female?

Selecting the Tiger DVD as the "Startup Disk" and pressing the alt key didnt work.

I dont think I can return it to him sensing from the way he suggested me to seek help from here instead of looking up the problem himself. My anxiety got the better me, I shouldnt have bought it in the first place.

Anyone reading this thread, please dont pay extra for any early copies of Tiger.

Thanks for all the help. Please close or delete this thread.
