Is there a way to change the pinwheel? I did a search of the forums and found some applications but they weren't for Panther (let alone Tiger next week). Is there a built in way to change/disable this?

There is no built-in way to change it.

What would you want to change it to?!? It serves a very specific purpose, namely to tell you that the application the mouse pointer is over has not responded to the OS in 6 seconds or more. Having a regular arrow pointer would leave the user confused as to why the app is not responding.

There is a haxie by Unsanity called Mighty Mouse that will let you change the cursors, including the pinwheel shape, to something else... if that's what your looking for.
Turning it off however is not an option.

It's not actually built in to Shapeshifter, but a guiKit can access its functions via SS. You still have to buy Mighty Mouse though.

I rarely see the SPOD anymore, and the few times I see it are due to Safari choking.

It's "beachball," not "pinwheel."

Sure? I thought it was part of the 2.0.1 update? I tried ShapeShifter briefly, and im sure I saw it there. I don't have it now to double check though, as it wasn't really my thing.
Still, Mighty Mouse is definitely good, and has a shed load of pointer sets available for it.

Yes, there is a MightyMouse section in the Shapeshifter prefpane, but it only comes into play if you also have MightyMouse installed.

I use Might Mouse also. Only because the beach ball really bugs me. Any other graphic doesn't get one my nerves like the beach ball.
