hey guys, sorry if this has been asked before...I really don't have much time to search through all the old posts.
Im going to be installing tiger tonight on my powerbook and I want to do a clean install. what is the best way to back up all my photos, pictures and documents? say for instance, can I just drag and drop my whole photos folder onto my friends powerbook? would that work? thanx in advance for any help....I can't wait to get this on my computer tonight!!!

Use Carbon Copy cloner to make full backup onto external or other drive.

What he said.
i.e. best way to do a clean install is
1. Use CCC to back up your entire drive to a spare drive.
2. Clean-install Tiger.
3. During the setup/registration phase at the end of the install, select "Import from another Mac" (not "partition"), and select your spare drive.
Your home folder, stuff within /Library, extra /Applications, etc. will be copied back onto the Tiger disk.
Or, you can import just the home folder, and bring across the other stuff manually if you really want a clean start.

wow im really confused.
Everyone has said a million different things about backing up and installing Tiger. I'm new, but what I did was put my important documents and such onto discs. Nothing else is important, I can reinstall AIM or whatever I need afterwards from the site. Other than that what should I do, Clean install is looking good to me since anyhting important I have, and can put it back on using my cd's. would you still say archive and install, or just go ahead with clean install.
I'm desperately lost

bradb28, we were just addressing ryanhugh's question; he specifically wanted to do a clean install. An archive+install is fine.
ryanhugh -- yes, it's easy to keep your bookmarks - clone your drive using CCC and then import your user! But if you want to cherry-pick and just back up a few things, you'll find Safari bookmarks in ~/Library/Safari/

Instead of using CCC to clone your drive, is it OK to use Disk Utility? Or is CCC (much) better?

I did a full backup but to test Tiger, I installed it on my mini with the install and archive function. It went so painless, I did the same right after on my PowerBook. Again, no problems. All my data was saved, bookmarks, mail, iTunes stuff, iPhoto stuff. Easily the easiest time I've ever had.
That said, it is always good to do a backup because some things can go wrong.
CCC is a very good way if you want to make a bootable copy on an external. If you have .Mac, you can use iSync and Backup to copy important stuff over to your iDisk, an external HD (even an iPod) or a CD/DVD.
