My teacher said that whenever he went on the internet, he got an error message that says that he has an Error 1 or 2. He typed this in and it said something about memory. How do I fix this??

Perhaps your internet is broken. Where did you get your internet? Maybe you should return your internet to the store for a refund.

On second thought, maybe you should allocate more memory to your browser application. Do a "Get Info" on your browser in the Finder and I think that's where it is. Been a long time since I've used the Classic OS.

My brother knew this guy in college that had a teacher once tell him that his brother received a Error 4... but I think he was exaggerating a bit.

I would start off by checking out http://www.appleerrorcodes.com/ and then increasing the memory alocation (Get Info on the application) for the app itself. (ie the one causing the crash)

^ It's a Mac, when he's typing in all caps for emphasis.

Really, what is wrong with you people? Not very helpful.

stwain2003, did you try upping the memory allocation in Get Info as some people suggested? Also, have you tried changing the extension set to "Mac OS Base" in the Extensions manager and rebooting, to see if the problem might be caused by a third-party extension? It's been years since I've used OS 8, but from what I can remember, I think those two things would be the first things I'd try.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I'm sorry, but posting a topic about OS 8 right when Tiger is about to become available deserves a few jokes. Especially when you weren't very specific and didn't explain the problem well in the first place. If you can't formulate a nice question, how are we supposed to give you an answer?

Oh, and tell your teacher that he sucks at the internet. Besides, the internet is about to go bankrupt anyway and I wouldn't waste my time with it. And what happened to error codes like "Error Code 0xf323322"?

BTW, I used to have that problem where typing "this" into my internet would make it say something about memory. Have you tried opening up the hard disk and giving it a quick blow to get the dust off? That did it for me.

If his Mac doesn't support OSX, then fair enough! Surely it supports OS9 though? I wouldn't know. Did the suggestions here work at all?

It's most likely a 7+ year old computer. I'm sorry to say, but "It's Dead Jim"

Did you ever think that we kept on joking because you said: "Will you guys actually help me rather than being Jackasses about it?? What the hell is your guys problem??"

It's unfortunate that your teacher is having errors, but trying to troubleshoot such a problem is almost impossible. Type 1 or Type 2 could mean MANY different things. Perhaps it's bad memory, conflicting extensions, a corrupt extension, HD issue, corrupt desktop, TCP/IP issues, browser crash, etc. etc. etc. Has he/she added a new piece of software, etc.

ALSO, http://www.appleerrorcodes.com/ has already been provided. What else do you want. We are joking around.

P.S. Your sig is large and annoying.

Again with the hostility... anyway, did you ever think that his point was "It's time to buy a new Mac"

Side note, why not consider upgrading to 8.5 or 9 or even the most current 9.2???

What model is it? Perhaps we would have been able to help you more if you had given us the appropriate information. You obvioulsy know specifications from your Wintel box info in your sig. Why not give us the model, amount of ram, current OS (AKA, the exact version), etc. etc.

Still…

Until X 8.6 was the best the Mac OS of yore ever got.

Still you have to realize, if you are on 8/8.1 you have an OS that is 6-7 years old. I'm amazed it has become so gobbed up and is still running.

There is this COOL thing on the front of the computer called a MODEL NUMBER. Either YOU or the owner should take 1/10th of a second and check that information out before acting like a child in a forum. Opps, you are a child.

Very funny. There is not one SINGLE Mac out there which can run OS 9.2, but cannot run Mac OS X. (Of course, there are Macs that can run OS 9.2, but cannot run OS X Tiger, but stwain2003 said that Mac would not support OS X in general.)

And BTW, I think as soon as it became obvious that stwain2003 was annoyed by all the jokes because he/she was really looking for help, it would have been time to stop joking around.

Time for a lock on this thread.

When someone comes here asking for help the least someone could do is try and give some good advice or not repond at all. Telling him to upgrade or get a new computer isn't right. Some people here really need to grow up.

It just seems to comical that this comes in the day Tiger's released. You have to see the humor in it.

And not for nothing, but there is Google. A search on "type 1 error mac" yields this:

http://dawn.thot.net/cd/112.html

So....

Yeah n00bs shut up if you don't know the answer or go download some Widgets or something.

Errors 1, 2 and 11 may also result from there being too little available memory for the system. The previous suggestions to increase browser memory are most likely correct, but be sure to leave some memory unused, in case the Finder feels a need to consume a bit more.

Man alive. I'm sorry, but some of you are really being assholes.

Why should he upgrade to OS 9? OS 9 was a piece of crap. 8 was more stable most of the time, and 9 didn't really offer much new in terms of features. The only reason to upgrade from 8 to 9 would be if you have some app that requires it. That's all.

Stwain2003, please tell us if one of these things worked:

- Giving the app more RAM

- Starting with "Mac OS Base" selected as the extension set

- Reinstalling the browser you're using

- Using a different browser

- Trashing the browser prefs, cache, and history

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
