I cant get it to work. I currently only have a 20 gb hard drive, fresh install of tiger, and about 20 mp3's.

ill type in "itunes," or something obvious, and press enter and nothing will happen. no drop down menu or anything. if I open and close spotlight, it'll then open up with "no results found" and "spotlight preferences" below. all the folders are selected and everything....

is there something I'm missing? I even busted out the instruction manual

Trying running the command described in this post. That should work.

hehe, i'm having the exact same problem, i've been digging through the install scripts and came across a reference to the following in the postinstall scripts:
sudo rm -f /System/Library/Extensions.mkext

i dont think that's "The Cause" but i do think it contributes to something. also, could you reboot and give me your dmesg output?

yeah keep me updated. later on I think I might make a diff thread calling out users of 1.4.7

im sure we are not the only ones with this problem.

when did you install the driver? right after you installed tiger? I wonder what would happen if you indexed before the install of the driver

How quickly does Spotlight search for everyone? With my admittedly old G4, results trickle in about as fast as they did when I used the search box at the top of Finder windows in Panther. I know Spotlight is searching through more, but I thought it would be faster.

Very quick on my new 1.5GHz PowerBook. I never used to use search/find in Finder, but Spotlight is great for so many things. I was editing the Finder .plist file to get List view preferences as I wanted them - rather than navigating the folder tree, I just searched for Finder in Spotlight, and it's the top hit.

I've also been using it as a launcher, and to get rid of iPhoto 'Originals' folders, after I discovered these were being kept! That was fun - I got Finder to open all 88 windows at once ... that took it a few minutes and a bit of beachballing .

I would like it more if the Spotlight results window was more customisable - like if you could open the view options window for it. Also, being able to get contextual menus to, for instance, 'open with' for files in the Spotlight menu, would be really nice. Time to submit feedback I think.

Oh well, at least I've just found out that you can cmd-R to reveal in Finder from the Spotlight window. The big problem I find is that it is not its own application so no menu commands can be used....

i can confirm problem for 2 more installations - spotlight stopped working after installing the D-Link 1.4.7 Driver for DWL-122 (which is IMHO the same as Netgear)

one was a powerbook, the other an iBook...

so far - would be nice to find a workarround - i am researching myself

bye

call me god

solution ist:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/StartupItems

(USE ON OWN RISK!)

the d-link / netgear install routine just messes the permissions. a message in the syslog file made me checking that

have a nice day

Reasonably quick, but quicksilver (no pun intended) seems to do it faster.
