I am currently getting myself organized before receiving my copy of Tiger, and would like to resolve something that has been nagging me for a while now:
1. When I first received my PowerBook (Nov '03) I created the Administrator account as required.
2. Instead of then creating a different 'Normal' user account to keep my files, network settings, preferences, etc separated, I have been using the Admin account as my regular login.
3. I realize now this is not an ideal situation, especially concerning system security and file permission vulnerability. This is the part that's been especially nagging me.
My Tiger plan right now is:
1. Manual backup of my '/Users/shortname/' directory (using temporary Root User login) to my LaCie external firewire drive.
2. Disable ALL Third-Party StartUpItems & PrefPanes
3. Use Disk Utility to verify my internal drive & repair permissions.
4. Initiate the 'Archive & Install', WITHOUT the 'Preserve Users and Network Settings' option selected.
5. Use the 'Setup Assistant' to create an Admin & SEPERATE 'Normal' user account (No Limits) within Tiger, then transfer my backup files/settings into this new 'Normal' account.
I am hoping this is a clean and efficient way to preserve all of my files, settings, etc while FINALLY being able to have a stand-alone Admin account for security.
I would really appreciate your wise feedback on this issue regarding any concerns, suggestions, warnings, etc, etc.
You guys rock!
