WTF is going on here? I installed Tiger today, and waited for it to finish indexing so I could try out Spotlight. Tried it, it works, w00t. But then, the damn thing keeps on starting to index again no matter what I do, even if it doesn't involve creating a document. Open an app - Spotlight starts indexing. About 24 minutes remaining. Open a new Safari window - Spotlight starts indexing. About 10 minutes remaining. 6 minutes later - still 10 minutes remaining! I think that one time I had the damn thing start indexing after all I did was a Spotlight search!

WTF? Is this thing indexing the OS cache files or something? Is anyone else getting this? What good is a search feature when I have to wait 20+ minutes every time I want to use it?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

That's definitely not normal - Spotlight should only have to index the hard drive the first time you start into Tiger.

I have the same problem. It keeps indexing and then it would stop. I try to type something and then it would start indexing again.

Hmm, it seems to have stopped doing it now... knock on wood.

Maybe it just hadn't finished indexing yet, and the fact that it was occasionally letting me use Spotlight at all was the actual bug. Or something. Either way, that was confusing and annoying. If Spotlight isn't ready yet, not letting me use it at all until it's done would be better than fooling me into thinking I can use it, and then sadistically yanking it away from me!

Yours may have stopped, but mine hasn't. Spotlight has been indexing on and off for the past three hours; I have no idea at this point what triggers it to start indexing again. I wonder how Spotlight handles Oracle database files; I hope it wouldn't try to index those. I tried adding my Oracle datafile directory to the list of folders Spotlight shouldn't index, but the operation was ignored. Maybe because Spotlight was in the middle of indexing...
