Does anyone here need to use a proxy (that requires a username/passwd) to access the web? You may be out of luck, i am.

In the network system preferences, the 'proxy requires authorization' checkbox always gets cleared after you apply changes.. i had a fresh install too (formatted my hard drive, restored my music, etc but not my settings). Stuff like the Software Updates also doesn't work..

What's going on at the network level is the program (safari or software update) will make the initial request w/o a username/passwd, be told by the proxy that authorization is required.. so far everything up until now is normal, but what's supposed to happen next is the software re-tries w/ the username/passwd it has available.. instead in tiger it just aborts and returns the error to the user.. it's probably related to the sys pref problem..

Could someone please tell me they got this to work (and how)? i filed a bug report w/ Apple but i dunno if maybe i am the only one seeing this bug?

Try deleting the file that stores your keychain. I believe it is com.apple.security.plist. Then reconfigure the proxy prefs and see if the settings stick.

the problem isn't so much the unsticking settings, it's more like the setting isn't being read.. i tried the old trash the prefs routine but it didn't seem to solve anything.. i'm curious, if you try to set up a proxy (even if you don't need to), do your settings even stick? you can enter anything for the test case for the addr, username, and passwd.. i'm just curious if that checkbox will stay checked once you click 'apply now'

i also had trouble doing one way chats.. but that's sort of a hack and depends on who you're chatting with.. if you chat w/ people w/ non-ichat clients, it definately won't work..

you may want to consider telling apple about your troubles.. with all the neat features of tiger, it shows apple IS listening, albeit maybe not immediately.. i filed a bug report about the proxy authorization issue and they emailed me asking for more info, so at least they're responsive..
